Gain confidence and develop a strong understanding of how to draw the portrait in charcoal. You will work from photography, master drawings and the live model. There is a strong focus on the importance of tone, line and proportion and you will develop the fundamental skills of drawing the portrait with accuracy and expression. We will provide the basic materials for you to complete the workshop. This includes: easel, board, paper, willow charcoal, white chalk, and putty eraser. Below is a list of recommended materials if you wish to pursue work at home and in the future. Nitram Charcoal HB: https://www.jacksonsart.com/nitram-academie-fusains-square-stick-charcoal-pack-of-5-hb Nitram Charcoal B: https://www.jacksonsart.com/nitram-academie-fusains-square-stick-charcoal-pack-of-5-b These charcoal sticks are much more durable than willow charcoal, and will not snap or break when applying reasonable amounts of pressure. It is much easier to gain control when drawing because of this, and you will find it easier to gradually work from dark to light. Willow Charcoal: https://www.jacksonsart.com/daler-rowney-willow-charcoal-10-sticks-assorted White Chalk Pencil: https://www.jacksonsart.com/cretacolor-white-pastel-pencil White Conte Crayon: https://www.jacksonsart.com/conte-drawing-pencil-white The use of these two will give you a further value range for the lights. The Conte Crayon is fairly muted and blends well for the half tones, whereas the chalk pencil will bring out the highlights. A selection of graphite pencils from H-6B Any small Stanley Knife or Utility Knife to sharpen pencil Putty Eraser: https://www.jacksonsart.com/faber-castell-putty-rubber Sharpening Block (or a piece of square sandpaper will work fine) Soft Brush: (For Blending) ABOUT THE ARTIST TUTOR, LUKE THOMPSON: 'For the past 6 years, Luke has regularly taught the fundamentals of drawing and painting at many locations including The Art House Wakefield, The Tetley Leeds, Harewood House, and Left Bank.
