Craven Arts – Terms of Membership and Code of Conduct

(For Artist Members, Friends Members, Volunteers, Tutors, Studio Holders, Trustees and Staff)

1. Introduction

Craven Arts Charitable Trust (“Craven Arts”) is an independent charity supporting artists, creatives and communities across Craven and the surrounding thirty mile radius. The Terms of  Membership and Code of Conduct outline the expectations, responsibilities and conditions of involvement with Craven Arts, whether as an Artist Member, Friends Member, volunteer, tutor, studio holder, trustee or staff member.

By applying for membership or engaging with Craven Arts in any capacity, you agree to abide by these terms.

All personal information is protected under data protection laws and handled in accordance with GDPR.

2. Membership Types

2.1 Artist Membership (Full Membership)

Open to practising professional artists aged 18+ living within thirty miles of Skipton.

Requirements

Applicants must apply via the Craven Arts website.

  • The application must include a link to an artist website or social media page

  • The application must include a CV and/or Artist Statement

  • Applications are reviewed by the Trustee Board within thirty days. Approval is confirmed by email.

Fees
  • £25 per year (reviewed annually by trustees)

  • Auto‑renewed annually

  • Cancellable via “My Subscriptions” on CravenArts.co.uk

  • Refundable within the first 7 days of membership

Definition of a Practising Artist

A practising artist is someone who:

  • Produces original artwork amounting to an exhibition or production of equivalent body of work

  • Regularly works within one or more creative disciplines, including:

    • Visual arts, crafts, photography, digital arts, animation, film, TV, VFX

    • Design

    • Cultural Heritage

    • Music, sound, performing arts

    • Architecture

    • Literature and spoken word

Artist Member Benefits
  • Eligibility to stand for the Trustee Board

  • Voting rights at the AGM and on matters raised by Trustees

  • Access to rent studios and workshop/meeting rooms

  • Eligibility to hire exhibition space

  • Invitations and discounts for Craven Arts events

  • Eligibility to take part in member exhibitions

  • Listing on Artists Page on the Craven Arts Website

  • Discount at the Art Shop Skipton

Artist Member Duties

Artist Members must:

  • Advocate and support the work of Craven Arts Charitable Trust

  • Act in good faith and in the charity’s best interests

  • Pay annual membership fees 

  • Attend the Annual General Meeting and exercise voting rights

  • Sign up to volunteer at Craven Arts House, keeping the building open and accessible to the public

2.2 Friends of Craven Arts Membership (Full Membership) 

Open to anyone who wishes to support the work of Craven Arts Charitable Trust.

Fees
  • £25 per year (reviewed annually by trustees)

  • Auto‑renewed annually

  • Cancellable via “My Subscriptions”

  • Refundable within the first 7 days of membership

Benefits
  • Eligibility to stand for the Trustee Board

  • Voting rights at the AGM and on matters raised by Trustees

  • Invitations and discounts for Craven Arts events

  • Automatic acceptance (no application review required)

  • Opportunity to support through donations or volunteering

Duties
  • Advocate and support the work of Craven Arts Charitable Trust

  • Act in good faith and in the charity’s best interests

  • Pay annual membership fees 

  • Attend the Annual General Meeting and exercise voting rights

  • Sign up to volunteer at Craven Arts House, keeping the building open and accessible to the public

3. Terms of Use

3.1 Use of Craven Arts Name, Logo and Membership

Artist Members and Friends Members, Tutors, Volunteers must gain permission from the Craven Arts management team for use of the Craven Arts branding/logo

Members must not:

  • Use Craven Arts’ name, membership status or logo for personal, political, organisational or commercial gain

  • Represent Craven Arts publicly without permission

  • Associate Craven Arts with personal views, philosophies or campaigns

3.2 Code of Conduct

Craven Arts is committed to creating a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

All individuals involved with Craven Arts are expected to:

  • Work respectfully as part of a team

  • Be a positive role model and promote arts and culture

  • Be punctual and presentable

  • Uphold Craven Arts’ values: Creativity, Community, Integrity

  • Maintain zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment or stigmatisation

  • Protect confidential and personal information

  • Follow all Craven Arts policies, including safeguarding, GDPR and health & safety

You must not:

  • Promote personal, political, cultural or religious beliefs while working or volunteering

  • Engage in behaviour that could bring Craven Arts into disrepute

  • Use alcohol or drugs while working or volunteering

  • Engage in illegal or criminal activity

Any concerns about behaviour or language should be reported to the Director, Selina McGonagle.

3.3 Training, Induction and Support

Craven Arts will ensure that tutors, staff and volunteers:

  • are trained or suitably qualified for their role

  • A clear induction is provided

  • Ongoing support is available both formally and informally

3.4 Termination of Membership or Role

Failure to follow these Terms and Code of Conduct may result in:

  • Termination of membership or role

  • Removal from volunteer or studio holder roles

  • Forfeiture of membership fees

  • Referral to police in cases of illegal activity

If you are unsure whether an action complies with the Code of Conduct, you must seek guidance from the Director.

4. Area of Operation

Craven Arts’ membership and activity area extends to a thirty mile radius of Skipton.
