Service Description

This short course of 6 weekly sessions will introduce you to the art of bookmaking – the craft of creating hand-bound books using simple tools, materials and techniques. Bookmaking is a mindful, hands-on process that slows you down and offers endless creative possibilities. PROGRAMME DATES AND DETAILS: Week 1: Thursday 19th February - Cut and Fold Week 2: Thursday 26th February - Pamphlet Stitch Week 3: Thursday 5th March - Hardback Leporello and 'Fancy Concertina' Week 4: Thursday 12th March – Embroidered Spine Binding Week 5: Thursday 19th March - Reverse Piano Hinge Week 6: Thursday 26th March - Independent Project Please ensure that you can attend each week, as the skills and knowledge taught build on the previous session. WHAT YOU'LL DO/MAKE/TAKE AWAY: Each week you will learn a different book structure and bind, from simple folded books to stitched bindings, and soft covers to hard covers, with each week becoming progressively more complex. You will make at least one finished book each week (quick processes will yield multiple books, e.g. pamphlet stitch; longer process will make just the one, e.g. reverse piano hinge). You will gradually build confidence and skills over the 5 directed weeks, with the final week designed for you to make a book of your own design with tutor support. This is an "intro to" short course and is designed for people with little or no previous bookmaking experience, as well as those who have dabbled but would like to learn in a more structured and supportive way. It is suitable for artists seeking creative formats to present their ideas, research or works in progress. By completing this course, you will be able to: 1. Identify and talk about a range of bookmaking techniques, tools and processes 2. Use bookbinding tools and materials safely and effectively 3. Make a variety of hand-made books using specialist equipment 4. Experiment with adapting techniques to suit your own creative ideas 5. Plan and create your own independently designed handmade book All materials and equipment will be provided. For the final week when you are completing your own independently designed handmade book, you may wish to bring your own photos, drawings, notes, etc. Zoe Platt is an artist-educator and book arts practitioner based in Yorkshire. With a background in graphic design and over a decade of experience teaching art and design in the lifelong learning sector, she brings both technical knowledge and a passion for making.
