Service Description

Discover the elegance and tradition of Chinese calligraphy in this hands‑on workshop led by Chris Newsom. This immersive session introduces participants to the beauty of brushwork using a variety of natural‑hair brushes, handmade papers, and traditional ground ink. You’ll begin by learning how to grind your own ink from pine soot sticks—a calming, meditative process that forms the foundation of calligraphic practice. Throughout the workshop, you’ll experiment on a range of surfaces, including “1000 use” practice paper, Xuan paper, mulberry bark with gold leaf, and even folding fans. Guided step‑by‑step, participants will explore the essential brush strokes used in Chinese calligraphy and bamboo painting. By the end of the session, you will take home a folder of your completed work, showcasing your progress and newfound skills. This workshop is suitable for beginners. What to Bring: An apron to protect clothing from ink splashes A palette and a water container if you have them. Everything else provided. Additional Notes: Not suitable for vegans (due to certain traditional materials used). Gloves will be provided for participants with ink allergies. About your tutor: Chris Newson is a Chinese brush artist, Craven Arts member and an active member of Yorkshire, Oxford and National Chinese Painting groups. Chris exhibits and sells locally and internationally. She has worked for 30 years in Education with 14 years learning and teaching Chinese style art.
