Service Description

A two-session course (2.5 hours each), led by Bridget March This introductory course is designed for anyone interested in exploring the creative possibilities of abstract art. Through guided experimentation, students will learn key principles and practical techniques to develop confidence and personal expression. Learning Outcomes Students will learn to: - Approach abstract art through playful exploration and experimentation - Work confidently with complementary and harmonious colour schemes - Use mixed media to build pattern, texture, and visual interest - Create simple stamps and stencils for unique mark-making - Develop balanced and engaging abstract compositions - Title, present, and discuss abstract artwork effectively Session 1 Students will be introduced to the foundations of abstract painting, including colour theory, mark-making, and layering. They will experiment with creating visual interest through varied marks, textures, and colour combinations, and will learn how to make simple stencils and stamps. Skills covered: - Layering marks and colour for dynamic results - Creating handmade stamps and stencils - Building texture through mixed media Materials Provided: Watercolour paper, masking tape, acrylic and watercolour paints, small pieces of linoleum, and acetate sheets. Students Should Bring: Paper sectioned with masking tape, plus any pens, markers, or crayons they wish to use. (Some paints can also be provided.) Session 2 In the second session, students will apply their skills to create two larger abstract pieces, developing them throughout the session. They will also be introduced to collage as an extension of their mixed-media practice. The session concludes with guidance on presenting and titling artwork, along with a supportive group discussion to encourage reflective evaluation. Students Should Bring: Pre-masked paper, their preferred mark-making tools, and images or materials for collage. About your tutor: Bridget March - Artist of Abstract and figurative visual arts Full time artists since 2012, Gallery owner, teacher and lecturer at HE for 9 years at Leeds University of the Arts.

Cancellations, refunds and exchanges: If you cancel your course or class 14 clear days or more before the start date, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel your course or class less than 14 clear days before the start date, refunds will be given at the discretion of Craven Arts. In the event that the course has to be cancelled or rescheduled, we will attempt to contact you with as much notice as possible and you will receive a full refund.
