Craven Arts House

Craven Arts are in the process of repurposing an old Victorian school on Otley Street, Skipton, to become a first class creative workshop and studio facility. This is expected to be completed in the Autumn of 2022 or early 2023. Craven District Council purchased the building for use as an arts centre in 2021 and have been working hard alongside Craven Arts to get the refurbishment launched in a climate of uncertainty; Covid, the availability of building materials and the current fuel crisis all playing a part.  Funding has been received from Craven District Council and Architectural Heritage Fund. Significant funding has been received from Historic England via the Heritage Action Zone funding.

We are proud to announce the refurbishment started on site on Monday 28th March. The contractors are Walter Carefoot and Craven District Council’s Hazel Smith is managing the project.

Through the build up of the last few years we have developed close working ties with CDC and this will continue as we move ever closer to the building being open to the public in late 2022. CDC continues to support the project in other ways too as a partner organisation and with fundraising expertise. Our funding problems are not at an end however and we continue to seek additional funding from other sources to complete the project.

Vision

The building is being refurbished with strong green credentials reflecting the ethos of Craven

Arts, and will provide secure cycle storage, community gardens, nesting for birds and a charging point for electric vehicles. The building is heated with air source heat pumps and solar panels.

Craven Arts offers and promotes opportunities for the Craven community to meet and connect with artists; participate in workshops and see exhibitions by Craven's established and emerging visual artists. We hold exhibitions, events and workshops that everyone is welcome to attend.

By providing arts facilities for creativity, professional development, education and training we will make Craven a better place to live both culturally and economically and make a positive contribution to the cultural life of Craven.
